Overview

The Tamang Heritage Trek is a perfect 10-day long trek in the shadows of the Langtang and Ganesh ranges. The trek goes along the trail between Ganesh Himal and the Langtang range.

It is magnificent in the sense that it includes all elements of the Tamang community. Their distinct language, dress, food, and traditional values are some of the major highlights of the trek. Don’t miss a lifetime experience of Nepal’s ethnic beauty!

The amazing vistas of the Langtang range are easily the stand-out on the trek. Similarly, Ganesh Himal and the Tibetan vicinity can be observed from the Nagthali viewpoint.

As a result, it makes the Tamang Heritage Trek more majestic in sceneries. Similarly, the authentic Tamang culture and heritage are the other aspect of the trek.

The hospitality and unique lifestyle of the Tamang community surely make up for a memorable trip. Similarly, there are several hot springs on the trails to relieve fatigue.

Firstly, the trip starts with a long drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubensi. After that, the trek heads west and leads to Gatlang.

On the way to Tatopani, you come across several hot springs. Continuing the trek, you gradually enter the Tamang villages and reach Thuman.

Making a slight descent, you head northwards to Timure and explore the historic Rasuwa Gadhi. Onto the final half of the trip, you head to Briddhim where you can enjoy the Tamang hospitality and culture.

Day 1:Arrival in Kathmandu

You will arrive at the Tribhuvan International Airport where a company representative will come to greet you. Then, you will proceed to your hotel where you can rest. Later, you can also go around the block for explorations. You can go shop for souvenirs or go for experiencing the city atmosphere.

The roads from Kathmandu to Sybrubensi continue along the bends and switchbacks of the green hills. We will exit the valley and pass the towns of Trishuli and Dhunche to Sybrubensi. Along with the turns, you are afforded some slight mountain views in addition to the village life you are already seeing along the way. There are many lodges and shops in Sybrubensi where you can make final preparations for the trek.

You will travel on dirt roads and through Bahundanda pass. On this trail, you get great views of the Ganesh and Langtang ranges. Descending and continuing from this pass we arrive at our destination of Gatlang, the largest Tamang village of the region. Also called the black village for the black-wood roofed houses, the village is a beautiful cluster of houses on the hill slopes. You can witness the Tamang people going about their daily life activities.

On the way to Tatopani from Gatlang, we can pass through the Parvati Kund lake. The lake is holy and attracts many pilgrims, especially during August. From here, your descent to Chilime Hydropower dam will be with wonderful views of Ganesh Himal and the Langtang ranges. Thereafter, we head to Tatopani where we can relax and refresh at the local hot springs.

From Tatopani, we will travel along the usual terrains besides hillsides and thick vegetation. On our way to Nagthali, we will be passing the dense forest views including that of Langtang, Kerung, and Ganesh Himal ranges. From here, we descend to Thuman. Here, the Tamang people practice shamanism and are culturally heavily influenced by Tibet. You can observe their daily life influenced by shamanistic rituals and celebrations.

Today, we trek close to the Nepal-Tibet border. We trek along the Bhote Khola on the ancient trade route between Nepal and Tibet. We will soon arrive at Timure. We can follow this route all the way to Rasuwagadhi. Rasuwagadhi is the site of an old fort, built on reclaimed land from China’s Qing dynasty. The remains of the fort are still to this day, and on the other side of the river from Rasuwagadhi is the border customs office of China. After exploring the fort, we will head back down to Timure.

We will continue along the route decorated with beautiful Rhododendron trees. Walking through the forested trails, we arrive at Briddhim. The village displays the Tibetan culture, from its 50 or so houses. They are all made of shingles of split stone and clustered around in an S shape. The locals here also indulge in agriculture with wheat, maize, and millet farming and rear livestock. You can enjoy the hospitality of these people on the home-stay in one of the houses.

The trek from Briddhim to Sybrubensi is a downhill trek and is relatively easy. We will be retracing back our trails down the dense forests and the riverbank of Langtang River. In the evening, after arriving in Sybrubensi, we can scour the market for any souvenirs you may like. You can get a hold of local handicrafts. Take a deep rest on your last day in this region.

We will enter back into the hilly outskirts of the Kathmandu valley. The highways meander across the hilly vales, as you bid farewell to the region. You can see the several settlements living on the edge of the valley and on a clear day the mountain views of Ganesh Himal ranges. In the evening, you will attend the farewell dinner we host for you as a way of thanks.

The Tamang Heritage Trek is one of the easier treks in Nepal. This short trek can be done by trekkers with an average physical condition. The trek can also be done all around the year; however, monsoon season should be avoided to get the best out of the trek.
