Overview

Rock Climbing in Kathmandu is one of the highly appreciated outdoor activities that are known to offer exciting adventures. Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is known to host many rock climbing sites, amongst which one of the often sought-after sites is located in the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. The rock climbing site is located to the northwest of Kathmandu, just outside of the ring road. The forest is lush and this climbing trip will give you adventure, a peaceful walk through the lush forest, and a great view of the valley and distant hills.

The climbing is carried out on the cliff of limestone located in the Nagarjun Forest. The forest is part of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and therefore, there is an entrance fee. The main access to the reserve, Phulbari Gate, is only 2 km north of Balaju, which is around 5 km from the focal point of the capital city. Its climbing grade is considered to be around 4a-7a, which makes this spot suitable for all sorts of climbers (beginners as well as experts).

Basically during the trip, we ascend more than 20 courses on a 55m high limestone cliff which is broken up into 4 separate faces. Most can be top-roped or lead on bolts as there are chain anchors on the top of the cliff. Cragsmen are recommended to bring something to place under the rope since it often goes over the rock edge when you are top roping. The climbing can only be done during winter, autumn, and spring as during summer, monsoon makes the cliff extremely slippery and dangerous.
