Overview

Tibet Overland Tour takes you to Tibet situated on a high plateau north of the Himalayas in Nepal. This tour offers you the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Tibet. Also, you can study the religion and lifestyle of the people living in these highlands. The tour serves as a spiritual journey, a cultural tour, a pilgrimage, and an exploration of the Himalayas.

Tibet Overland Tour takes you to the cultural hubs of Tibet. You’ll get to explore Shigatse, Gyantse, and Lhatse which are some of the biggest cities in Tibet. Other places you will visit are the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Tibetan market, and other attractions. You also enjoy the sights of many mountains including Mt. Everest (8848m). Similarly, you can witness the Brahmaputra River and Yamdrok Tsho on the tour.

The trip starts with a sightseeing tour in the Kathmandu Valley. Then, you drive to Kerung crossing the Nepal-Tibet border. From Kerung, you drive to Lhatse via Tingri, which gives offers great views of the Tibetan landscape. Then, crossing Lhakpa La (5267m), you head to Shigatse. The next day, you’ll have a short sightseeing hike and visit the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. Further, you head to Gyantse crossing two passes: Karo La (5036m) and Kamba La (4640m) to reach Lhasa. For the next two days, you explore Lhasa. Potala Palace, Barkhor Market, and Drepung Monastery are a few of the attractions in Tibet. You’ll fly back to Kathmandu with sublime views of Mt. Everest (8848m), Cho Oyu (8188m) and other mountains.

Day 1:Arrival in Kathmandu

Touching down at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be welcomed by our office representatives who will guide you directly to the hotel. Freshening up from the day's journey, you can explore around and enjoy the pleasant evening.

  • Maximum Altitude1300m

The second day of the trip and we take another day off at Kathmandu to prepare for the trip. This includes making sure our tickets and all the required permits are up to date so that we face no problems midway through our adventure. Taking some time off we also tour around the UNESCO world heritage sites spread around the Kathmandu valley including the temples of Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, cultural heritage in Kathmandu Durbar Square, and the stunning Boudhanath.

    The day begins early as we make our way out of Kathmandu heading towards the border of Kerung. We exit the capital city enjoying the natural landscapes and find the banks of Trishuli River. We follow the river up north and into the stunning Langtang Region. Past the towns of Dhunche and Sybrubensi, the road reaches Rasuwa Gadi. Overnight at Kerung Border.

    The first day of our trip in Lhasa and we head towards the town of Tingri before reaching Lhatse. Exiting the city of Kerung, the journey soon reaches the lake of Paiku. At an altitude of 4,591m, the emerald lake offers gorgeous Himalayan landscapes in addition to views of the arid Tibetan Plateau. Taking some time off to explore the lake, we continue our journey along the Pum Qu River to Tingri.

    Heading away from the hamlet of Tingri we once again follow the Luoluo River heading through Gedong and Jiacuoxiang. The next stretch of the journey takes us through the arid Tibetan landscapes alongside the river banks to reach the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve. Then, we make our way towards the town of Chawuxiang before crossing the Manggapu and Xiabbu rivers to reach Shigatse.

    • Maximum Altitude3900m

    One of the shorter days of the trip, today, we make our over to the city of Gyantse for the night. For the entirety of the journey, we follow the banks of Nyang Qu River as the journey crosses several villages and towns including Jiacuoxiongxiang, Bazhaxiang, Bainang, and Zijinxiang to reach the picturesque town of Gyantse. Reaching the town early you are free to explore the stunning monasteries of the region.

    • Maximum Altitude3950m

    The final of our driving days, today, we make our way to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. Making our way out of Gyantse, the journey heads past the Noijin Kangsang Peak (7,206m). Enjoying the exquisite Himalayan views, we continue our journey towards the Kongmu Lake where we take some time to enjoy the beauty of the emerald lakes. Then, we head alongside the Yamzho Yumco before driving alongside the Lhasa River to Lhasa.

    The first day of our sightseeing in the capital city of Lhasa and begin our journey from the Potala Palace. This world heritage site overlooks Lhasa boasting mesmerizing views of the city alongside the Himalayas. The authentic Tibetan aesthetics showcases antique cultural and religious treasures dating back hundreds of years. From Potala Palace, we make our way to the Drepung monastery. The oldest, as well as the largest monastery of the nation, showcases the ancient Tibetan way of life in addition to teachings of the Buddhist religion.

      The final day of our journey here in Tibet and we head towards the Jokhang Temple, often referred to as the spiritual heart of Tibet. Exiting the temple, we make our way over to the Barkhor Street which encircles the temple itself earning it the nickname of the holy road. Looking around the market place at Barkhor Street, we end our journey at the Sera monastery which is one of the three oldest and most important monasteries of Tibet.

        Concluding our adventures here in the Tibet we prepare for our flight back to Kathmandu. Heading past the majestic Himalayan ranges including the Everest Himalayan Range amongst many others we fly back to Nepal touching down at the capital city of Kathmandu. Making our way directly back to the hotel we conclude all the scheduled activities and you are once again free to enjoy the rest of the day. The day ends with a lovely farewell dinner.

            Useful Info

            Tibet Overland Tour can be done throughout the year except during the winter season. Since Tibet lies at high altitude, travelers need to be cautious of altitude sickness. Otherwise, the tour can be done by anyone and is pretty easy.
