Kangchenjunga, also spelled Kanchenjunga, is the third-highest mountain in the world, standing at an elevation of 8,586 m (28,169 ft). It is part of the Himalayas and is located between Nepal and Sikkim, India. The mountain has five main peaks: Main, Central, South, West, and Kangbachen, with three peaks straddling the Nepal-Sikkim border and two located entirely in Nepal’s Taplejung District.
Historically, Kangchenjunga was believed to be the tallest mountain until 1852. Measurements by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India later confirmed that Mount Everest is the world’s highest peak. In 1856, Kangchenjunga was officially recognized as the third-highest mountain globally.
The first successful ascent was made on 25 May 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band during a British expedition. In respect for the local Chogyal’s tradition, the climbers stopped just short of the summit to preserve its sacred top. This tradition continues to this day for all climbers. Notable members of the expedition also included John Angelo Jackson and Tom Mackinnon.
