Overview

Mt. Island Peak Climbing is an adventurous challenge for climbers and the perfect introduction to full alpine climbing. The top of the Island Peak (6189m) rewards with a grand panorama of the Himalayas like Lhotse (8414m), Nuptse(7861m), and Kali Himal (6985m).

Further, you can also get to explore the Sherpa villages on the way and learn about the lifestyles of locals in the mountain regions.

The trek on the Island Peak Climbing Journey offers you scenic views of Mt. Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8414m), Nuptse (7861m), Pumo Ri (7165m), and Khumbu Icefall among others. Likewise, the trip also offers many cultural exchanges.

Sherpa villages like Namche, Tengboche, and Chhukung are some major stops on the trip. Furthermore, the Sagarmatha National Park also grants amazing bio-diversity.

Firstly, a short flight from Kathmandu will take you to Lukla. After a stop at Phakding, you’ll head to Namche Bazaar. Next, you trek along the Imja River to reach Tengboche.

Afterwards, you’ll trek to Dingboche watching the beautiful view of snowcapped mountains. From Dingboche, you start your trek to Chhukung and continue to the Island Base camp alongside the view of Lhotse Glacier.

Finally, you will climb to the summit and retrace your path back to base camp. You will return to Namche Bazaar after passing the Sherpa villages of Pangboche and Tengboche. Ultimately, you will head to Lukla and fly to Kathmandu.

Day 1:Arrival in Kathmandu

You will arrive at the Tribhuvan International Airport where a company representative will come to greet you. Then, you will proceed to your hotel where you can rest. Later, you can also go around the block for explorations. You can go shop for souvenirs or go for experiencing the city atmosphere. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Today, we embark on a tour around the major UNESCO world heritage sites in the Kathmandu valley like Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath. After lunch, head towards Kathmandu Durbar Square and Patan Durbar Square to learn about the culture and religion in the Kathmandu Valley. On this day, you can also make the necessary preparations for the peak climbing trip. Overnight in Kathmandu.

From Kathmandu, we shall get on a flight and head towards Lukla. The flight takes about 40 minutes and goes across the mountains of the Khumbu region. Admire the dazzling scenery on the flight to Lukla. Upon arrival in Lukla, gather your things and begin the trek to Phakding. The walk goes along the Dudh Koshi River and stops at the small settlement of Phakding. Overnight in Phakding.

The trek for the day takes us to the biggest Sherpa settlement in the Everest region called Namche Bazaar. This village consists of restaurants, cafes, and nice lodges. To reach here, we need to get our permits evaluated in Jorsalle and enter the Sagarmatha National Park. Observe the amazing mountains of Mt. Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8516m), and Ama Dablam (6856m) en route to Namche, Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Today is a day separated for acclimatization. We won’t be doing any sort of hiking but rather the day shall be spent visiting the numerous landmarks of Namche. Make your way to the Khumjung and Khunde villages. Later, head towards the Hotel Everest View to get a brief look at Mt. Everest (8848m). You can also choose to head to Syangboche which is also a great viewpoint to witness the Himalayas in the Everest range. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

The route to Tengboche sees a gradual rise in elevation and goes across barren lands and slippery trails. The trail leaves Sanasa and Phunke Tenga to follow the Imja River all the way to Tengboche. Tengboche is a Sherpa village that is home to the Tengboche Monastery, the largest monastery in the Everest region. From the monastery, we can see peaks like Mt. Everest (8848m), Ama Dablam (6856m), and Lhotse (8516m). Overnight in Tengboche.

The trail from Tengboche goes through Pangboche initially. It houses an ancient monastery called the Pangboche monastery which is a major tourist attraction. After spending some time here, we walk on the banks of the Lobuche River. The river unfolds the Imja valley. As we gradually ascend, we reach Dingboche. Here, we can visit a local monastery and enjoy the culture and traditions of the Sherpa community. Overnight in Dingboche.

Dingboche is a summer village and, from here, you can observe amazing views of Mt. Ama Dablam (6856m) and Mt. Everest (8848m). Walk along the glacial moraines and find yourself near the Imja River. Take a quick break at Bibre village, and then head out Chhukung. It is a small settlement below the Chhukung Ri (5550m). Overnight in Chhukung.

From Chhukung, the trail to the Island Peak Base Camp is pretty steep and strenuous. Walk south and then east towards the main point of the valley. Walk on the southern moraine of Lhotse Glacier and find yourself in front of a number of Everest Mountains. A crisscross route through the Imja River and Lhotse glacier moraines will take us to the Southwest side of the Island Peak. We arrive at base camp after trekking for a while. Today is the biggest day of the trip as we head out to the summit of the Island Peak (6189m). The climb will commence early in the morning in order to avoid the strong mid-day winds. The climb to the summit is pretty taxing so, be sure to properly use the trekking equipment. From the summit, we can see a 360-degree view of mountains like Mt. Everest (8848m), Ama Dablam (6856m), Lhotse (8516m), and Cho Oyu (8201m). After climbing the summit, head back to the base camp. Overnight in Island Peak Base Camp.

The walk for today sees us descend on the wider parts of the Khumbu Khola and across Sherpa villages like Orsho and Somare. There is a different trail that leads initially to Upper Pangboche. Pangboche is a scenic village that is flanked by Mt. Everest (8848m), Ama Dablam (6856m), and Thamserku (6608m). Overnight in Pangboche.

From Pangboche, we shall retrace our steps back to the Imja Khola and later along the Dudh Koshi River. The trail is beautifully decorated with forests of pine, rhododendrons, and juniper. Along the way, we take a quick break at Tengboche. We arrive at Namche Bazaar in the afternoon. We can either rest or explore the village for the rest of the day. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

The route from Namche to Lukla sees a gradual decrease in altitude and it is quite difficult as well. Be sure to tread carefully. We need to walk on the banks of the Dudh Koshi River and we shall take a quick breather at Phakding. After having lunch, we shall continue the descent until we arrive at Lukla. Overnight in Lukla.

From Lukla, get on an airplane and fly towards the major city of Kathmandu. The flight lasts roughly 40 minutes and provides a picturesque view of the mountains of the Khumbu region. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel. Once at Kathmandu, you can explore the city and enjoy Newari cuisines. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Today is a day that has been separated for contingencies. This day is mostly separated due to the fact that the flight may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances and events. If you are in Kathmandu, then you can spend the day going souvenir shopping in Thamel. Overnight in Kathmandu.

The favorable time for Island Peak climbing is during autumn between the months of September to November. Island peak Climbing has a challenging route that is adventurous and ensures a thrilling experience. So, the climbers have to have some degree of physical fitness and previous experience.
