Overview

Everest 3 Passes Trek is an exciting trip in the Everest region which lies northeast of the capital- Kathmandu. This trek connects both the Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lake. On this trek, you cross three high passes that link the four distinct valleys of Bhote Koshi, Gokyo, Khumbu, and Imja Tse. The high passes that you cross are Renjo La (5360m), Cho La (5420m), and Kongma La (5535m).

Everest 3 Passes Trek offers you a thrilling trekking trip as you cross three high-mountain passes. This trek also takes you to Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar. On the trek, you can enjoy the up-close views of mountains like Mt. Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8516m), Makalu (8463m), and Cho Oyu (8188m). You also get to see monasteries, gompas, and Sherpa heritage and culture on this trek. Similarly, the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site is also an attraction on the trek.

Firstly, you arrive at Kathmandu and take a flight to Lukla. Next, you trek to Phakding and head north to reach Namche Bazaar. You trek to Thame and then to Lumde from where you head to Gokyo via the Renjo La Pass (5360m). After a hike to Gokyo Ri (5360m), you head to Thangnak the next day. Crossing Cho La Pass (5420m), you trek to Dzongla and head to Lobuche. Then, you head to EBC via Gorakshep and hike to Kalapatthar. Crossing Kongma La Pass (5535m), you head to Chhukung and trek to Pangboche. Then, you return to Lukla via Namche Bazaar and fly to Kathmandu.

Day 1:Arrival in Kathmandu

The snow-capped Himalayas will welcome you as you arrive in Nepal. A company representative will receive you at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Then, a short drive through the busy streets in the capital city leads you to the hotel. Next, you can freshen up at the hotel and explore the nearby areas around the hotel.

A Himalayan journey will only be one to remember if the preparations for the journey are foolproof. For this, we take a day off in the capital city making sure everything is good to go. We make our way to the respective authorities to gather all the necessary permits for our journey while also visiting the local markets hunting for gears and all other necessary equipment for our trip. If time permits, we can also take a quick sightseeing tour around the UNESCO world heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley.

We begin our trip early as we fly out of Kathmandu to the picturesque village of Lukla. At 2840m, the airstrip of Lukla offers a thrilling experience. After a brief rest, we begin our journey heading towards Phakding. The journey is a pleasant one heading past Chheplung with stunning views of Mt. Khumbila (5,760m) to reach Phakding.

Following the stunning Dudh Koshi River with equally the views of Mt. Thamserku (6,608m), we cross the river on a series of suspension bridges including the Hillary Suspension bridge. Gradually ascending, the trailheads in and out of several Sherpa villages including Bengkar and Monjo to reach Jorsalle. This also marks our entry into the Sagarmatha National Park. The final stretch of the journey heads through lush green forests to reach Namche.

Arguably one of the most populated and frequented stops on Everest Treks, Namche boasts a mix of natural beauty and authentic culture. We can hike to the Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde. Alternatively, you can also make your way to Everest View Hotel which as the name suggests boasts mesmerizing views of the entire Everest Range.

Making our way out of Thame, we take the less crowded route and head over to Thame. The trail quietly descends through lush green forests edging ever closer to the Himalayas. Past Phurte, the trail heads over to Smsing and then over the Bhote Koshi River to reach Samde where we make a brief stop. After a brief rest, we resume on the trail to Thame.

Exiting Thame, the trail climbs on to a ridgeline heading past Thambuteng guided by views of Sunder Peak (5361m). We continue our journey across the Chhujungma Khola continuing up to Taranga. Passing Dinjung, the journey stops at Gormo. The final stretch of the journey heads through a series of Mani walls reaching Lumde.

Exiting Lumde, the trail climbs steeply for about 3 hours to reach the base of the Renjo La Pass. Leaving behind the river valley, the trail climbs through the rugged Himalayan landscapes heading deeper into the valley. At an altitude of 5,360m, the summit of Renjo La Pass boasts stunning views of Cho Oyu (8,201m), Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Cho Latse (6,335m), and Taboche (6,367m) alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier. From the summit, we begin our descent to the Gokyo located at the edge of the Gokyo Lake.

The day begins with the views of the Himalayas reflected on the tranquil waters of the Gokyo Lake before we begin our hike to Gokyo Ri. At an altitude of 5,360m, the Himalayan viewpoint has been the go-to place for trekkers to properly acclimatize and to also get a closer look at the Himalayas. Enjoying the glorious views of the Everest Range, we head back to Gokyo before setting off towards the hamlet of Dragnag.

Often considered as the hardest day of the trek, today, we make our way to the top of the Cho La Pass (5420m). Marked by Ama Dablam (6,856m) and Cholatse (6,335m) on either side, the journey ascends steeply atop the Himalayan summit marked by seas of prayer flags. Enjoying the mesmerizing mountain views from the summit, we begin our descent to Zhongba.

Exiting Zhongba past the stunning Cho La Khola, we begin our descending journey heading towards the picturesque Cho La Lake. The descending journey is an enjoyable one taking us past through a series of stupas and memorials devoted to fallen mountaineers. Enjoying the views of the Awi Peak (5,245m), we head to Lobuche.

Making our way out of Lobuche, the trail slowly climbs through the glacial moraines of the Khumbu Glacier. Alongside the northern ridge of Everest (8,848m), the trek offers stunning views of Pumo Ri (7,165m), Lingtren (6,749m), Khumbutse (6,636m), and Nuptse (7,861m) alongside several others. Past Lobuche Pass (5110m), we ascend towards the summit of Changri Glacier to reach Gorakshep. After a brief rest, we trek to the Everest Base Camp. The base camp offers astounding views of the Himalayas in Everest ranges, the Khumbu Glacier, and Icefall. After spending some time, we return to Gorakshep.

We begin our journey heading to the view summit of Kalapatthar for early morning views of the sunrise. The mountain viewpoint boasts unforgettable Himalayan panorama including the Mt. Everest (8,848m), Nuptse (7,861m), Changtse (7,543m), Lhotse (8,516m), Ama Dablam (6,812m), Lingtren (6,749m), and Cho Oyu (8,201m) among others. Taking enough time to enjoy the panoramic Himalayan views, we begin our descent back towards Lobuche.

The final of our mountain passes today we set off atop the Kongma La Pass (5535m). Exiting Lobuche, the trail ascends past the Khumbu Glacier and begins the ascent to the top of the Kongma La Pass. Marked by a series of prayer flags and mountain crests, the summit of Kongma La offers a final take to the majestic beauty of the Himalayas in the Everest and Makalu ranges. Later, we begin our descent heading past Bibre to reach Chukung.

Exiting Chukung, we set off on an ascending run to meet the classic Everest trail heading out of the region. Past Chukung. The trail heads through Dingboche and Pheriche to find Orsho and Somare. The final stretch of the trek heads over to Pangboche enjoying the view of Mt. Ama Dablam (6856m).

Today, we begin our descent making our way down to reach Debuche beyond which lies Tengboche. The Dawa Choling Monastery in this village is well known not only for being the oldest monastery of the region but for also hosting the annual Mani Rimdu Festival. Taking some time off at Tengboche, we begin our final descent to Namche.

On the final day of trekking, today, we make our way back to Lukla. Exiting Namche, the trail heads through the lush green forests to reach Jorsalle which marks the end of the Sagarmatha National Park. Past Monjo and Chhamuwa, we arrive at a series of suspension bridges leading to Phakding. Taking some time off at the village, we head back to Lukla.

Today, we make our way back to the capital city ending our journey. The day begins early as we fly out of Lukla enjoying one final view at the majestic Himalayas before heading over picturesque hilly landscapes. Touching down at Kathmandu we make our way directly to the hotel to freshen up and rest from the days of the journey. A lovely farewell dinner awaits at the end of the day as we draw the curtains on an adventure in the Himalayas.

Useful Info

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the ideal times to do the EBC Heli Trek. The seasons offer stable weather conditions for this trek. Similarly, the trek is harder than most of the treks in the Everest region. So, trekkers must be in good physical condition, and having prior trekking experience can come in handy as well.
