    All about the Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek.

    Jiri to EBC Trek is the old classic trekking route that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay took to reach the summit of Mt. Everest (8848m). This trek route avoids the Lukla flight and offers a longer and more detailed adventure in the Everest region.

    Trekkers get to explore the breath-taking natural beauty of the Sagarmatha National Park, Himalayan lifestyle, and observe the fascinating culture of the Sherpa. The route takes you all the way to the Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar providing up close views of the majestic mountain peaks.

    The 23-day Jiri to EBC Trek starts with your arrival in Kathmandu. During your stay in Kathmandu, you will visit some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath.

    From Kathmandu, you will drive to your first destination in this trek, Jiri. The trek starts from the low altitude of Jiri and slowly gains altitude. You pass through the settlements of Bhandar, Junbesi, Surke and eventually join the main trail at Phakding. After Phakding, the trek route takes you to Namche.

    Beyond Namche, the trail continues to rise and reaches Tengboche. From Tengboche, you will trek past Pangboche for another acclimatization day in Dingboche. Leaving Dingboche, you will make way to Everest Base Camp via Thukla, Lobuche, and Gorakshep.

    Everest Base Camp is a spectacular experience for trekkers as it offers up close views of the beautiful Himalayas. Next, you hike to Kalapatthar next morning which is a viewpoint and provides panoramic views of Everest (8848m), Cho Oyo (8188m), Makalu (8481m), Ama Dablam (6856m), Thamserku (6608m), and the famous Khumbu Icefall.

    From Kalapatthar, you retrace your steps back to Lukla passing Pheriche, Phortse, Namche, Monjo and Phakding on the way. To return to Kathmandu, you will take a flight from Lukla the next morning and leave the Everest Region.

    1. Day 01 Arrival in Kathmandu |1300m

      The trip starts with your arrival in Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu.  Our company representative will welcome you at the airport and then you will be transferred to the hotel for your overnight stay in Kathmandu. Feel free to explore around the local markets or just relax in your hotel as there are no scheduled activities today.

    2. Day 2 Pre-trip Meeting and Sightseeing around Kathmandu valley

      There will be a pre-trip meeting where our company representatives will give you a more detail about the trek and what to expect. They will answer any questions you may have as well. Afterward, you meet with our tour guide who will take you out for sightseeing around Kathmandu. You will visit some of the most popular sites; Pashupatinath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and, if time permits, others as well.

    3. Day 3 Drive from Kathmandu to Jiri |1995m| 6-7 Hrs

      On the 3rd day, you make your way toward the Himalayas and drive along the Araniko Highway to get to your first destination, Jiri. You will pass the old Newar towns of Banepa and Dhulikhel to reach Jiri. During the drive, you can see the view of eastern Himalayas which includes Ganesh Himal (7422m) and Langtang Lirung (7227m) if the sky clears up. Overnight stay in Jiri.

    4. Day 4 Trek to Bhandar |2190m|7 Hrs

      The trek to Bhandar starts by crossing a river on a suspension bridge. You pass through hospitable villages, farms and walk through the mesmerizing rhododendron and oak forests. After Shivalaya, the trail climbs to Sangba Danda via Deurali pass (2,705 m) and then descends to the small village of Bhandar. It is a Sherpa village with a huge chorten located on a vast meadow. Overnight in Bhandar.

       

    5. Day 5 Trek to Sethe village |2985m| 7 Hrs

      After Bhandar, you walk downhill to Likhu Khola and cross a bridge to reach Kinja. The trail then rises uphill and passes through terraced farmlands while also providing you a spectacular view of the distant villages and lush landscapes. After walking for a few hours you arrive at Sethe, a beautiful village situated in the middle of the rhododendron forest. Overnight in Sethe.

    6. Day 6 Trek over Lamjura Pass |3530m| to Junbesi |2700m| 7 Hrs

      Today’s trek begins with a steep climb and passes the small Sherpa settlement of Dagchu and Goyam on the way. You then ascend slowly to Lamjura pass (3500m) through deciduous forests of rhododendrons, magnolia, maple, and birch and walk downhill to Junbesi, another small Sherpa village. The village is located on the bank of the Junbesi River and offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes. Overnight in Junbesi.

    7. Day 7 Continue trek through Solu to Nunthala |2194m| 7 Hrs

      You will first cross Junbesi Khola on a wooden bridge and descend through Salung. From Salung, you can see Mt. Everest on a clear day. Beyond Salung, the walk leads you downhill and then crosses another bridge before reaching Taksindu Pass (3870m). Up ahead, you will pass through pine and hemlock forests, and shepherd huts to reach your destination for the day, Nunthala. Overnight in Nunthala.

       

    8. Day 8 Trek to village of Khare Khola |2040m|6 Hrs

      The trail descends through Dudh Koshi River and takes you through terraced fields and small settlements. You then descend through a forest and walk uphill to the Rai village of Jubhing. From Jubhing, the path ascends to a village around a ridge and then ultimately takes you to the settlement of Khare Khola. Overnight in Khare Khola.

    9. Day 9 Trek to Surke |2290m|7 Hrs

      From Khare Khola, you make a steep climb to Bupsa Danda and then follow the trail to Kanre. Up ahead, you walk through another dense forest of rhododendron and oak where you might be able to spot some langur monkeys. The trek continues north to Paiya and follows an uphill and downhill trail to Surke. Overnight in Surke.

    10. Day 10 Trek to Phakding |2610m|6 Hrs

      You leave Surke and then the tributary valley before marching north towards Chauri Kharka  It is a large settlement with a monastery that is a major producer of grains for the Everest region. After a small break here, you climb up to Lukla, the entrance to the Everest region, and then join the main trail that does downhill to Phakding. Overnight in Phakding.

    11. Day 11 Trek to Namche Bazaar |3440m|6 Hrs

      From Phakding, you climb towards the village of Jorsalle through the enchanting waterfalls and then pass through the rhododendron and magnolia forests. The trail climbs steeply and provides you the first glimpse of the Mt. Everest (8848m). Soon you arrive at the main trading town of Everest region, Namche Bazaar which is also known as the “gate way to Everest’’. Namche Bazaar is a charming town with all the facilities one can expect in a city.

    12. Day 12 Acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar

      As you have gained high altitude quickly, you will take the day off to get adjusted to high altitude that will continue to increase throughout this trek. You can spend the day exploring the shops, bakeries, monasteries and museum of Namche Bazaar. Many tourists visit the Khumjung Monastery as it supposedly has a Yeti scalp and palm preserved inside a glass box. Or, you can hike to the nearby Sherpa villages of Khunde and Khumjung.

       

    13. Day 13 Trek to Tengboche |3860m| 5 Hrs

      The trail to Tengboche climbs steeply for the first hour providing a view of Ama Dablam and Mt. Everest. Along the trail, you’ll enjoy rhododendron bushes, birds, mules and excellent views of the Himalayan landscapes. Once you reach the village of Tengboche, you can check out the Tengboche monastery and get some insight on the religion, culture and festivals celebrated there. The monastery is also the biggest in the region. Overnight in Tengboche

    14. Day 14 Trek to Pangboche and on to Dingboche village |4410m|5 Hrs

      You pass through the lush forests of birch and conifer, and then slowly descend down to Deboche. You will then cross Imja River and reach Pangboche. It has Pangboche monastery, the oldest monastery of the Everest region, and you can rest and visit the monastery before continuing onto Dingboche. From Pangboche, you will come across thousands of Mani stones (engraved Buddhist player stones) and continue trekking uphill to Imja valley all the way. Overnight in Dingboche.

    15. Day 15 Acclimatization day. Optional Hike to Chukung Ri |5550m

      It is another day for acclimatization. Depending upon your level of fitness and readiness, you can choose to hike up the Chukung valley to Chukung Ri (5550m). From Chukung Ri (5550m), you can enjoy the remarkable view of the snowcapped mountains and glaciers. Or, you can just rest in Dingboche and just enjoy the view of surrounding Chukung and Imja valley, and panoramic view of the Everest Range.

    16. Day 16 Trek to Thukla and continue to Lobuche |4910m|5 Hrs

      The trail makes a steep climb to the foot of the Khumbu glacier and leads you to Thukla. You then walk on the zigzags trail through the boulders of glacier moraine. On the way, you can see a memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Himalayas. The final segment of today’s trek climbs gently along the glacier and takes you to Lobuche. It is located at the foot of Lobuche East Peak (6119m), and from here you can see Lobuche East (6119m), Pumo Ri (7165m), and Nuptse (7861m). Overnight in Lobuche.

    17. Day 17 Trek up the Khumbu Glacier to Everest Base Camp |5364m|8 Hrs

      Today, you march towards Everest Base Camp via Gorakshep. The trail takes you through the glacial moraine of Khumbu glacier. En route to Gorakshep, you get splendid view of Nuptse (7861m), Pumo Ri (7165m), the Mt. Everest (8848m) and many others. Upon arrival at the base camp, you will be surrounded by the picturesque panorama of the majestic Himalayas. After spending some time at the base camp, you return back to Gorakshep. Overnight in Gorakshep.

    18. Day 18 Morning climb to Kalapatthar, Trek to Pheriche |4210m|7 Hrs

      You wake up early in the morning and hike to Kalapatthar. From the viewpoint, you can witness breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas and exquisite view of the Mt. Everest (8848m), Cho Oyo (8188m), Makalu (8463m), Ama Dablam (6856m), Thamserku (6608m), Everest Base Camp, and the surrounding glaciers. After some time you head back to Gorakshep for breakfast and then retrace your steps back to Thukla or Pheriche in the afternoon. Overnight in Thukla/Pheriche.

    19. Day 19 Trek to Phortse village |3810m|7 Hrs

      After Pheriche, the trail descends downhill and takes you through a forested trail to Phortse village. En route, you can observe the village life, cultural heritages and customs of the villagers and how they live in these isolated parts. You will cross Pheriche Pass (4270m), and villages of Orsho, Somare, and Pangboche to arrive at Phortse. Overnight in Phortse.

    20. Day 20 Trek to Namche Bazaar |3440m|7 Hrs

      You say goodbye to Pheriche and walk back to Namche Bazaar. The trail takes you steeply downhill following the river and then through the birch and rhododendron forest. While trekking, you can enjoy the view of the Mt. Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8414m), Ama Dablam (6856m), and many other mountains in the backdrop. You have been trekking in the Himalayas for many days now so in Namche, you can just rest while enjoying the lower altitude. Overnight in Namche.

       

    21. Day 21 Trek back down valley to Monjo or Phakding|2610m|6 Hrs

      A few hours of walking from Namche will take you to Monjo. The trail drops downhill from Namche and cross the Dudh Koshi River over the suspension bridge. You will pass village of Jorsalle from where you will exist Sagarmatha National Park. From here, Monjo is only a short walk. If you decide you push forward and walk past Monjo for the overnight stay in Phakding instead.

    22. Day 22 Trek to Lukla|2840m|6 Hrs

      This is the final day of trekking. You follow the Dudh Koshi River and enjoy the lush green surroundings on your way back to Lukla. The walk to Lukla is uphill and will not be too long. In the evening, you can celebrate the completion of the trek with some of the local beverages and delicacies. Overnight in Lukla.

    23. Day 23 Fly Lukla to Kathmandu |35 minutes|Farewell Dinner

      Leaving the Everest Region, today, you take an early morning flight from Lukla and fly back to Kathmandu. After checking into the hotel in Kathmandu, you can head out for some sightseeing or souvenir shopping. Later in the afternoon, you will join the group for a farewell dinner hosted by the company. This marks the end of this long trip.

    24. Day 24 Departure

      As the glorious Jiri to EBC Trek comes to an end, a company representative will take you to the airport. We hope that we have been a great partner to you on the journey. Goodbye!
